Sorry, It’s Not a Trader Joe’s…It’s Private Suite Karaoke

I know, you were hoping for a Trader’s Joe. Let’s face facts, we’re not getting a Trader Joe’s in Collingswood, NJ. Even better though, we are getting a Songbird Karaoke! What is that? Glad you asked, Let’s start at the beginning…

First, we’re Ronnie and Michael – this is us!

Since moving to Collingswood in 2006, we’ve had cool adventures, met fabulous people, and always had a good time. Last year, we were lucky to take a family trip to Japan. Michael had lived there years ago and wanted to show us the amazing city of Tokyo. He was right, it was a-mazing.

While we were there we did private room karaoke.

Don’t be alarmed if you don’t know what private room karaoke is. It is not big here but it is huge in Japan. Private room karaoke is where you and your private party (in this case, my husband, son, daughter, and me) go into a room and sing karaoke.

Okay, let me tell you a few things.

1. I am a horrible singer.
2. No, really. H.O.R.R.I.B.L.E
3. I, of course, had never sung karaoke in a regular karaoke bar. I’d probably get booed out of there and never be able to show my face (anywhere!) again.
4. Funny enough, I love to sing.
5. I usually only sing in the car.
6. I do not care about singing in front of my family or close friends. They know I’m bad. They just have to accept it and love me anyway.
7. I wasn’t thrilled to go to the private room karaoke place in Japan but hey, I’m fun-loving so I was in.

So here’s what happened…

I LOVED IT. I mean it. We booked the room for two hours and stayed for three. We wanted to stay longer but the food they offered was not great and we were starving.

It was so much fun. When we came home we wanted to do it again. We wanted to bring more people with us. But, at the time, we couldn’t find a place that allowed kids other than one that limited the hours to Sunday and Monday for a hot minute.

Idea hatched.

Let’s create our own private suite karaoke place for all people, especially families but also for small groups of friends and for big groups of friends and for super, cool parties and hey, why not corporate events too!

We started looking around and the old Mason meeting room, right on Haddon Ave. was for sale.

After months and months, we were finally able to close and receive our approvals for zoning!

So, here we are! Redesigning the building for private suite karaoke. Oh and we’re going to live above the business. We’re redesigning the upstairs for our residence.
