Date Night – Let’s Get It Right!
It’s time for the perfect date night!
First, let’s not get too hung up on the word perfect. It’s way overrated. Let’s just concentrate on you having a date night. Spending time alone with that special person is awesome but we’ve got some thoughts on making it happen without getting caught up in perfection.
Don’t concentrate on your wallet
Having a great date night is not about how much you spend. As Dianne Grande Ph.D. says, “The underlying point is that, for most people and especially those in established relationships, it isn’t about how much is spent for the event. It is about being together and prioritizing the other person over your obligations to work and other family members.”
And that’s it. This date night should be the time where you show the special person in your life that they are a priority to you. A priority above all other obligations. That is one thing that makes someone feel truly loved, when they are the priority.
Talk it up
Communication is key on this date night. Showing someone that they are a priority to you doesn’t work if you are looking down at your phone all night. It means looking into their eyes, listening to what they are saying (even if sometimes you’ve heard that story 1,000 times already), responding to them, and generally enjoying their company.
When it comes to phones, Nancy Colier LCSW, Rev. tells us, “We don’t feel part of our environment because we are not behaving as if we are a part of our environment. We are connecting only to our devices and then wondering why we feel connected only to our devices.”
Disconnect from your phone and connect with your partner!
Change it Up
Dinner and a movie can be a great date, but maybe you need to change things up a bit. The National Marriage Project advises that you “may be particularly likely to benefit from a regular date night if you use it as an opportunity to do more than that old standby…”
There are so many fun things to do on a date night these days. Have you considered an Escape Room, or Ax Throwing, or possibly the most fun thing of all to do on a date night, karaoke at Songbird Karaoke!
Not it!
Take turns planning your date nights. It’s no fun if the pressure of planning the date night always falls on the same person. Even better, it’s great to see what your partner might plan. It might take you totally by surprise and bring you even closer together.
The Loving Roots Project indicates that taking turns in the planning “allows for each partner to feel surprised and it brings in an element of spontaneity.” Now, that sounds exciting, doesn’t it?
Wrapping it up
There you go, a few critical aspects in planning the perfect (or not so perfect) date night. Remember what Emily Blatchford recently said, “The most important message a date night or special occasion or catch up — whatever form it takes — conveys to the couple is that they are creating a unique and special space for one another.” Everyone should feel unique and special, especially your partner!
